the last empress kdramaSummary: Present day Korea monarchy with the emperor marrying a commoner, Oh Sunny, to hide his flaws and crimes. Oh Sunny, a small-time musical actress and a huge fan of the emperor, becomes the empress and suddenly gets in the middle of the chaos inside the palace.

Trailer: The Last Empress

Genre: Romance, Fantasy
Episodes: 48
Stars: Jang Na Ra as Oh Sunny
Choi Jin Hyuk as Na Wang Shik (Imperial Family’s Bodyguard)
Shin Sung Rok as Lee Hyuk (Emperor)
Lee Elliya as Min Yoo Ra
Shin Eun Kyung as Lee Hyuk’s mother

Likes: Love the plot! We get the chance to see how the Korean monarch would have looked like in the present – well it looked as chaotic as that of an ancient monarch. Everyone wanted to get hold of that top position and would do everything to get it.

It’s not so serious monarch drama. A bit of comedy has been added as well so it was actually fun to watch. Sometimes though, it was hard to tell when the story is still a joke or it’s becoming serious. Thin line!

I love the costumes and how the costume designers preserved the traditional designs on hanboks but would totally looked modern. I specially love the emperor’s costumes like the intricate golden embroidery on his outfits that commanded rank, power and wealth! It’s also nice to see the modern outfits of the royal servants. Prim and proper just like the old ones.

Top cast! We’ve got Jang Na Ra and Choi Jin Hyuk for the main roles and the supporting are brilliant actors as well! Shin Sung Ruk is awesome, such a good actor. And I’ve got to add Shin Eun Kyung and Lee Elliya who were both so brilliant in their annoying roles.

Remarkable Roles! Who’s my favourite? Let’s see…

Oh Sunny – the small time theatre actress, daughter of a fried chicken restaurant owner, who was used by the emperor as the perfect alibi for his crime. She took the palace by storm and became a favourite not just by the people but by the grand empress dowager who later bequeathed her wealth to the young empress. After so many attempts to kick her out of the palace dead or alive, she survived slowly unraveling the truth behind the deaths in the palace. Later on, the emperor fell for her but it’s a bit too late.

Na Wang Shik – this got to be my favourite transformation! I mean yeah from a big, fat guy with a heavy accent to a super handsome, good-built guy  who looks pretty much like Choi Jin Hyuk! Oh wait, it’s Choi Jin Hyuk everyone! I love it! It was like a fairy godmother waved her wand and ta raaan… I must just have missed that fairy. But yes, Na Wang Shik, survived after getting hit with a bullet in the head and determined to take revenge on the emperor for his mother’s death.

Emperor Lee Hyuk – I love this guy! He’s got to be my favourite! Why? Because he’s sexy when he’s evil and he’s cute when he’s not, lol! I even love his voice. I was rooting for him at the end especially taken Na Wang Shik out of the equation. I thought there was hope! Anyway, he made his mark. He was so kingly in those outfits, shared sweet moments with the empress, tried his best to be her knight in shining armour and he actually had a change of heart.

Min Yu Ra – this girl was a leech, a very pretty leech. She bullied everyone, she changed sides a lots, she was heartless, ruthless but turned out to have a very pitiful story. After getting dump, tortured, chased out, she survived! Such a tough lady!

Empress Dowager – greedy for power and wealth that she would even sacrifice her own children in return. So heartless, vain and down right crazy! To stay in power, she had to control everything and she was damn good at it.  But got to admit she was also funny especially when things don’t go her way.

The Ending. I’ve got to settle with it just like that. I think it’s the best way to end it anyway. The closure was good except for one thing, and that’ll go to dislikes.

Dislikes: Na Wang Shik just didn’t show up anymore then after browsing the net for an answer, realized that Choi Jin Hyuk couldn’t do the last four episodes due to scheduling conflict! Wutt! He was supposed to be the main lead! That was disappointing.

The drama was still extended by four episodes and I found it already draggy when I was still half-way! The story kept going back and forth.

Conclusion: Even if it became draggy and the main lead was no show in the last episodes, the plot was great and the roles were brilliant, so I give it a…

tunnel kdramaSummary: Park Kwang Ho, a detective in the 80’s tried to solve a series of murder cases in his hometown but when he was about to catch the culprit in a tunnel where the last murder took place, he was transported 30 years later where he still tried desperately to solve the case with the hope of getting transported back to the past.

Genre: Time-travel, Crime, Thriller
Episodes: 16
Stars: Choi Jin Hyuk as Park Kwang Ho
Lee Yoo Young as Shin Jae Yi
Yoon Hyun Min as Kim Sun Jae

Like: Another time-travel goodness! This time with some murder cases to be solved. I like the way it started. We got all characters thrown into our faces in the beginning leaving us the question “Who’s who?” We’re trying to speculate who’s the murderer, who’s the child, we came up with some theories, some guesses; am I not right? I like it! The story-line makes us all feel like detectives! It’s very engaging.

I like Choi Jin Hyuk’s more mature role here. I think it suits him well so as the 80’s leather jacket and buggy pants! Although his face looks too polished for the 80’s (he should have avoided facials for a couple of months before taking this role 😉 ), he definitely had the right attitude. Job well done!

Miss profiler aka daughter of our detective hero looked very stiff to the point of being creepy robotic but I ended up liking her. I was always looking forward to her insights when solving cases. And liked her more when she developed some chemistry with Kim Sun Jae, although Sun Jae mostly looked more made up than her (lipgloss!)

The comedy part of the show is a good diversion to its serious genres. Seriously how are you gonna treat a sunbae who looks very maknae in all angles?! Eottoke?

The mystery part was  a definite mind-boggler! Lots of questions up until the last episodes. Of course, I was most curious on what’s the 2 murderers killing motives.

Mok Jin Woo – serial murderer hiding in the light, looked totally normal, even sounded very wise, a terrific talker, father-figure, good friend, good listener – fantastic charisma! I was sooo curious what his motive was! The making of the villain for this drama was awesome! The writers put a lot of thought into that role. And of course a big hand of applause to Kim Min Sang for bringing that role into life.

Epic scene when Mok Jin Woo met Jung Ho Young in prison. Here’s a fight between who’s the best and justifiable serial killer.

The way the writers integrate the lessons of Professor Shin Jae Yi at the uni into the real scenerio is I think very educational (that if you paid much attention).

Nerve-wracking final episode. The chase, the bait, the gamble and yes finally, Kim Sun Jae personally handcuffed his mother’s murderer! What a relief but what? Our Park Kwang Ho going back to the past?

Dislike: Park Kwang Ho going back to the past raised lots of very important questions?  So would that mean Ji Hye won’t be growing up as an orphan? That would also mean Park Kwang Ho would wait for 30 years to solve the case? Hm, how is this working out? I think it would have been better if he didn’t go back to the past so the story that happens in the future won’t have the possibility of changing. Paradoxes alert here!

fated to love you kdramaSummary: Lee Gun, a chaebol who manages his family’s company wanted desperately to propose in Macau to his girlfriend but by fate he met Kim Mi Young, a shy secretary in a law firm back in Korea who was also in Macau for a trip. Mi Young got pregnant with Lee Gun’s child after one night of spending together. Lee Gun, after knowing that had to take Mi Young as his wife.

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Episodes: 20
Stars: Jang Hyuk as Lee Gun
Jang Na Ra as Kim Mi Young
Wang Ji Won as Nam Se Ra
Choi Jin Hyuk as Daniel

Likes: I’m sure I’ve seen it before but this kind of story is something I would always watch over and over
again. Reminds me a lot of BOF. They’re the candies of dramas. Addictive, fun, teasing makes you swoon on the (male) leads and has a big production giving our girl that cinderella effect. Tis the reason why I watch kdrama, that one day I would be enjoying another entertaining show like this one.

Very, very attractive leads! Let’s start with…

Jang Hyuk – totally handsome and sexy! Yet another crush of mine :). Have you seen his nose? Perfectly crafted to match his sexy face haha! Actor aside, I love Lee Gun too. The way he laughs, cries and looks at his very shy wife. Wahh! I wanna have him! You saw how sexy he was when he was trying to be the endorser of his own shampoo, so hot! And that long hair, I wish he never had a haircut!

Jang Na Ra – pretty face that exudes innocence just perfect for her role as Mi Young. I love how Mi Young would adjust her eyeglasses while flickering her eyes. So natural.

Wang Ji Won – though her beauty is a bit too edgy for a ballerina, still a pretty face. I thought her role would turn
evil but she remained defeated.

Choi Jin Hyuk – tall, handsome and successful. Just the perfect rival for the almost perfect Lee Gun. Glad they picked someone who’s equally desirable :).

Lots of teasing moments which always ended up as cliffhangers. Always makes me watch the next one and the next…

Lots of funny moments! Prenatal class was top! Prenatal teacher who appears as different characters throughout the drama was a great comical relief.

Love the cameos of Clara and that another guy (probably famous sportsman) as the endorsers of shampoo.

Happy ending for everyone!

Dislikes: I found it a bit too trying hard to show that the two had a happy end. Could have done it without the kids.
It was somehow stiff in the end.

Jang Hyuk with short hair, not much my type. He still looks handsome with short hairdo but his long hair was an important feat. I mean just imagine Gu Jun Pyo without his long, curly locks.

emergency couple kdramaSummary: After some years, a divorced couple meet each other  as medical interns in the same hospital. Both have to fulfill their dreams, find peace and maybe love in the chaotic ER world.

Genre: Romantic Comedy, Medical
Episodes: 21
Stars: Song Ji Hyo as Oh Jin Hee
Choi Jin Hyuk as Oh Chang Min
Lee Pil Mo as Gook Chun Soo
Choi Yeo Jin as Shim Ji Hye
Clara as Han Ah Reum

Likes: Divorced couple falling back in love again seems to be the trend this year. It’s different from the usual, I like it! Korea is definitely breaking free from the conservative and traditional ways, which is not all bad if in the end it’s for the best of the individual. Aside from divorce, this drama also shows a strong single mom and a confident young intern characters which again a sign of an open-minded society.

Lots of funny moments! It’s more comedy than the serious ER drama.

Was looking forward to a Choi Jin Hyuk-lead drama after watching Gu Family Book and The Heirs.

I love Chun Soo’s character and I think Lee Pil Mo did a great job portraying him! He’s this brilliant doctor who’s just all work, very private, cold but then became soo cute when he’s falling in love!

I think Shim Ji Hye is just great! Very confident in acting!

Certified happy ending! I think it’s the kind of ending everyone loves.

Dislikes: I just didn’t really warm up to Song Ji Hyo and the character Oh Jin Hee eventhough she got prettier in the end. Then of course the chemistry between her and Choi Jin Hyuk wasn’t really there.

Why is it always attractive to guys in dramas when the ladies drink too much?!

the heirs kdramaSummary: Kim Tan, a handsome, cool young guy and heir to the biggest corporate group in Korea aka Chaebol falls in love with the simple Eun Sang, daughter of their housemaid.

Genre: Romantic Comedy, School, Melodrama, Teens
Episodes: 20
Stars: Lee Min Ho as Kim Tan
Park Shin Hye as Cha Eun Sang
Kim Woo Bin as Choi Young Do
Krystal Jung as Lee Bo Na
Kim Ji Won as Rachel Yoo
Kang Min Hyuk as Yoon Chan Young
Kang Ha Neul as Lee Hyo Shin
Park Hyung Shik as Jo Myung Soo
Jun Soo Jin as Kang Ye Sol
Choi Jin Hyuk as Kim Won

Likes: I won’t say no to another Lee Min Ho! Plus it’s Park Shin Hye as the leading lady.

Huge intro! Hollywood, mansion, car, rich californian lifestyle… it was exciting!

Eye candies! So many of them.

One kissing scene that I really like, they didn’t hesitate!

Favorite characters award goes to Lee Bo Na – rich, cute, pretty and she delivered her dialogues pretty well. Another one goes to the mom of Kim Tan, she was the star of the show.

Why Choi Young Do? Hah, the bad boy image, the looks, the hairstyle, the ride, the hotel and he always looks terrific in his outfits!

Why Kim Tan? Got to admit, I’m not yet over the Jun Pyo syndrome plus the surfing board, the car (at least when he was in LA), the top Chaebol label and yeah he fought for the girl that he liked.

Dislikes: It was overhyped! The story is just average… poor girl meets Chaebol, father disapproves and so on and so forth. It was lacking good side stories that could keep the excitement. What a waste of characters, there were plenty of them like what happened to Rachel, she started very strong. How about the pair Bo Na and Chan Young? Choi Young didn’t end up as the great Ji Hoo (BOF). The story became draggy very early because it was too focused on the 2 leads.

The ending? I was hoping for a good epilogue that could save it all but unfortunately none.

gu family book kdramaSummary: The story follows the the life of KangChi, a half-human and half-mythical creature, who till the end tried to protect the people who were precious to him.

Genre: Fantasy, Period, Melodrama, Romance
Episodes: 24
Stars:
Lee Seung Ki as Choi Kang Chi
Bae Suzy as Dam Yeo Wool
Lee Sung Jae as Jo Gwan Woong
Jo Sung Ha as Dam Pyung Joon
Yoo Yun Suk as Park Tae Seo
Lee Yoo Bi as Park Chung Jo
Sung Joon as GonYi
Choi Jin Hyuk as Gu Wol Ryung
Yoon Se Ah as Ja Hong Myung
Lee Yeon Hee as Yoon Seo Hwa

Likes: Great story! Never one boring episode for me and I’m talking about all 24!

I always like period drama especially good ones and Gu Family Book belongs to that category. The story is rich!

Great cast! Plenty of really good actors here. I specially love the villain, Lee Sung Jae. I mean hands down, he was just great! Another one of my favorite is Choi Jin Hyuk aka Wol Ryung, father of KangChi. He was hot especially when he turned evil! Hm, I seem to like the bad ones :).

The dialogues were just sooo good especially between the Admiral and Lord Bi Jo! These 2 were always fun to watch.

I like the love story of Kang Chi and Yeo Wool but I think I was truly moved by the bittersweet love story of Kang Chi’s parents! Tragically good!

I’m happy to see Lee Seung Ki paired with someone younger. Finally!

Dislikes: Not sure of Bae Suzy. Somehow her acting wasn’t too period. Was it the accent?

The epilogue, hm. I like how it ended but somehow it was rushed. I was so spoiled with how they put details on the period scenes.

My Rating: 8.5 stars! (10 as highest)
